Start the free routes now
Early Start, regional center, and school district assessments are free, have legal timelines, and can run at the same time as a private waitlist. You don't need a diagnosis to ask.
- Under 3: refer to Early Start. The program has 45 days to evaluate and hold the first planning meeting.
- 3 and older: send the school district a written request. It has 15 days to send an assessment plan and 60 days from your signed consent to finish.
- Developmental concerns at any age: the regional center must complete intake within 15 working days.
Answer four questions (age, concern, ZIP code, and how you'd pay) to see free public programs and local evaluators.
Where do I start?Make the wait shorter
- 1
Ask for the cancellation list
Tell each practice you can come on short notice, if that's true.
- 2
Join more than one waitlist
Cancel the others when you get a firm date.
- 3
Ask what can happen before the first visit
Some practices send intake forms and rating scales early, which can shorten the evaluation itself.
- 4
Ask your pediatrician about interim referrals
Speech, occupational therapy, or parent coaching often don't need a diagnosis to start.
Gather what the evaluator will ask for
- Report cards, teacher notes, and any school or Early Start assessments.
- Medical records, hearing and vision results, and developmental screening results.
- A short log of what you're seeing: when, where, and what helped.
- Short videos of the behavior that worries you, if your child is comfortable with it.
When not to wait
If your child loses skills they had, stops responding to their name, or you're worried about their safety, call your pediatrician now. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.
